PAMINE Project: phase 2
Season 2006-2007:
6145 trees planted and a nursery with 45.000 seedlings

In September 2006 close to the Lapetanha village, the Surui indians built a nursery without external support. They grew a number of endemic species among which mahogany, tamboril, cerejeira, pupunha, açaí and tucumã. Around 45.000 seeds were planted, potted in small plastic bags in the shade and protected from cattle wit a fence. They also built a water tower with an electric pump using solar electicity for the project to ensure a sufficient watering capacity.

Part of this year's work was to attend the nursery Une partie des travaux de l’année ont été consacrés à l’entretien de ces arbres. Il a fallu nettoyer les zones de plantation. De nombreux arbres ont paru mourir durant la sécheresse de juillet-août 2006 mais ont re-germé durant la saison des pluies.

The funds received this year from Aquaverde have all been used for the maintenance of the nursery and plantation.

The rainy season started late this year, so the Surui planted in fbruary and march 2007. A total of 6145 trees were planted, divided as follows:

1900 Mahogany (Mogno)

1575 Cerejeira (Amburana cearensis)

1070 Açai palm (Euterpe oleracea)

800 Babaçu palm

800 Jatobá

In march 2007, part of the seedlings were distributed to other Surui villages to start test planations in their resepective areas, so that each clan got a chance to experiment participation to the project.
